For the last few weeks we have been spending our Tuesday evenings with the diverse and inspiring young ladies group at Forest Road youth centre.
We have created a community board in collaboration with them to be part of Hackney Downs Studio’s (HDS) project ‘The Wall, Boundaries’. The project saw the transformation of HDS’ car park into an outdoor gallery space with over 30 artists submitting work. HDS set the theme ‘boundaries’ as a reaction to the physical challenges they had in developing a creative hub in the industrial space of an old warehouse asking the questions;
‘How do we react to the challenge of moving into a space with constraints, barriers and obstacles?
How do we find freedom, creativity and expression with boundaries?’
We took this theme to the the young ladies and had a series of insightful discussions in regards to emotional and social boundaries where we were more than impressed with some of the contributions and comments made by the participants.
Exploring the word ‘boundaries’ we began looking at the physical attributes; confines, borders, perimeters, segregated, constraints, circumference and fixed limits moving on to emotional and personal boundaries that create guidelines, rules, which are built on a mix of beliefs, opinions, attitudes, past experiences and social learnings that all create ‘identity’, a personal way to behave.
Taking the theme of identity and the idea of space and physical circumference we decided to use the participants shapes to represent these social, personal, emotional, and physical boundaries. We later discussed and how they empower ourselves, protect our self esteem, maintain self respect and lead us to enjoy healthy relationships.
We scaled these images down and arranged a composition for our board. Photo coming soon!
